I've been struggling with a bit of "fashion block" lately, but am ready to jump back into things with a pending question about wearing hats (I believe the official question asked of me was "How do you get a hat to stay on a fat head?" which really made me LOL- love ya Cass!). I'm focusing on fedoras for this post since they are the most prominent trend in hats right now, though these tips can really be applied to most styles.
The right fit
Though it seems obvious, the first step in successfully wearing a hat (and keeping it on a "fat" head) is to buy the right size. Many stores erroneously carry only "one size fits all" hats, so it leads one to believe that you either can wear hats or you cannot. This just isn't the case, so long as you are buying an appropriately fitting hat. Make sure you try the hat on in the store so you can be sure it fits properly. Check the tag to see if it's "one size" (H&M is good about carrying multiple sizes). A fedora should easily slide on your head, though it shouldn't be so loose that it flops around. It should not be so tight that it's difficult to pull on and/or leaves a red mark across your forehead. The brim should be about in line with your eyebrows, but should not hide your face. If you have a wide, square or round face, tilting the hat so the brim is slightly crooked, or turning the hat slightly off-center, will help narrow your face. If you have a small face or a petite frame, be sure to buy a hat with a bit of a smaller brim so the hat doesn't "swallow" you.
The right hair
Styling your hair specifically for your hat selection is vital, not only to look extra cute, but to prevent (or at least reduce) hat hair. If you have long locks, the best option is a low ponytail or loose chignon around the nape of your neck. If you have bangs or short hair, either pin back the front of your hair (Fig. A), or bobby pin it flat in line with the rest of your hair (Fig. B). It also looks best (perhaps in my subjective opinion) to tuck your hair behind your ears, to avoid a Mary Kate Olsen type sloppy-grunge look (Fig. C).

The right attitude
I'm going to be a broken record on this point, but the success of any piece of fashion relies almost entirely on your confidence while wearing it. If you don't believe you can pull off a fedora, you probably won't. As long as you get the right fit and "own it" you'll look like a fashionista with ease!
I'm gonna check H&M for a hat for me.
ReplyDeleteI like them, but I always hate the way they look!
I think if I straighten my hair- or maybe pigtails it would look better.
Thanks Sarah!
